OVERVIEW
Co-motion Lite is an affordable and useful Shareware version of the brainstorming features available in Bittco's fully-featured commercial version of Co-motion.
Co-motion Lite specializes in group brainstorming. Co-motion Lite empowers efficient and effective collaboration for teams, departments, task forces, even for groups separated by distance and time. Real-time, multi-user technology energizes collaboration as participants brainstorm ideas in a session over the network. Idea generation tools focus the group on three essential areas of decision making: actions, objectives and concerns. Participants instantly organize the brainstorming by printing reports that show the group's concerns, objectives, and actions surrounding issues or problems.
Other features include chatting, a resizable palette where the group can exchange messages in real time, as well as tools for finding, listing, and scrolling through the ideas in a shared, live document called the session. Be in as many sessions as you can handle, with as many people as you want, wherever and whenever it is convenient.
Host and participant capabilities in every copy saves costs and simplifies setup and administration.
REQUIREMENTS
Co-motion Lite requires a Mac® running System 7 or better, 4 Mb of total RAM, a hard disk, and an AppleTalk® compatible network, including EtherTalk and others.
INSTALLATION
Co-motion Lite is distributed as a single file called “Co-motion Lite Package” which is a self-extracting archive. When this file is opened from the Finder™, it creates a folder containing the Co-motion Lite application and supporting documentation.
To install Co-motion Lite, double-click it. When prompted to extract, choose a location on your hard drive, preferably on the startup disk (the one which has your System folder).
CONFIGURATION
Make sure that your AppleTalk, or other network service is on, through the 'Chooser' under the Apple menu and the 'Network' control panel if required.
Make sure that your Macintosh has a name and owner name with the 'Sharing Setup' control panel. Also with the 'Sharing Setup' control panel, make sure that 'Program Linking' is started, indicated by the button next to program linking being titled 'Stop.'
For easier access, you may allow guests to program link by opening the 'Users and Groups' control panel, double-clicking 'Guest,' and checking the 'allow guests to program link' option.
If you have concerns about security, you may freely assign users, groups and passwords.
Very important: Rename your Co-motion Lite application in the 'Co-motion Lite' folder so that it has a unique name. A good name would incorporate your name. For instance, 'George's Co-motion.' Co-motion Lite cannot communicate with any other Co-motion with the same name. Renaming your Co-motion will ensure that you can easily communicate with all your friends and co-workers who use Co-motion Lite.
USE
The balloon help will get you off to a good start so use it until you thoroughly understand Co-motion Lite.
Once you register, you'll receive the full printed and on-line documentation. In the meantime, the details here will get you started and ensure that you enjoy your trail of Co-motion Lite.
To host a session, simply choose 'New' from the 'File' menu. Others will link to your session.
To link to a session that someone else hosts, choose 'Link' from the 'File' menu, navigate to the host's computer, and enter security name and password as required. You'll receive a list of sessions available on the host to which you've linked.
You may freely host and link to as many sessions as you can handle.
The host enters the issue by typing in text next to the swirl icon. The host, along with everyone joined, can create and move ideas in the session window. To create an idea, choose an idea type from the Idea palette at the top-left of the screen, then click to place the idea. Type in the text of your idea, and hit enter or return. Your idea is immediately visible to everyone.
Use the three types of idea icons constructively. The shovel tool is used for concerns, the target tool for objectives, and the runner tool for actions.
Use the browse hand on the idea palette to select and move ideas.
At any time, enter chat in the chat palette at the bottom-left of the screen. Type your contribution, hit enter or return -- or click the arrow button -- to send your chat to the group.
If the variety and number of ideas become bewildering, use the Scroll palette, accessed by the 'Scroll' item under the 'Windows' menu, to quickly navigate around the session window. You can also work with lists, and subsetted lists, of ideas with the Find window opened from the 'Find' item on the 'Ideas' menu.
There is no need to stack or order the ideas in any way. The report will list and sort things alphabetically. At the end, choose 'Print' from the 'File' menu to print out all the ideas brainstormed.
Hosts should remember to save the session file for future use. Participants save a link file which they can open or double-click to re-enter a session, provided the session is available on the host machine.

WHAT IS SHAREWARE?
“Shareware” is a method of software distribution which gives users a chance to try software before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to register. Details vary for individual programs -- some request registration while others require it; some specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the software, to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains all rights with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Like commercial authors, Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, and the programs are of comparable quality (in both cases, there are good programs and bad ones). The main difference is in the method of distribution. The Shareware author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their software.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook—whether it’s commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier because you can try before you buy. Furthermore, since the Shareware author’s overhead is low, prices are generally low as well. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee — if you don’t use the product, you don’t pay for it.
